Understanding and reframing our thoughts can seem like a daunting task. Our minds often struggle to connect and process everything we think. It’s essential to recognise that our thoughts don’t magically appear; they are the result of what we think, both subconsciously and consciously. Think about how search engines and social media ads seem to know exactly what we’ve been talking about or searching for. Ads for that pair of shoes you want, the vacation you’ve been dreaming about, or the course you’re considering enrolling in seem to pop up everywhere. These ads are a constant reminder of our desires and needs, making it hard to stop thinking about them. Now, consider how this same process happens with our thoughts. What we allow into our minds automatically shapes our frame of thought. If we focus on worry, we start thinking about everything associated with that worry, feeding it until it manifests in various aspects of our day. It’s a knock-on effect. Conversely, when we’re happy, well-rested, and excited about life, our thoughts are filled with positive things like upcoming holidays, our loving partners, and other sources of joy, which in turn manifest more positivity. By understanding these analogies, we realize that we are the creators of our own thoughts, whether good or bad. Therefore, we can intentionally change our way of thinking to focus more on the positive than the negative. We all know what it feels like to be happy or unhappy. If we start intentionally shifting our focus towards positive thoughts, we create a cycle of positivity that motivates us to think even more good thoughts. Consider the analogy of a wealthy person who continues to accumulate wealth. They are in a space of abundance, which flows easily into their life. On the other hand, a person facing challenges may focus on immediate needs finding it extremely difficult to focus on the positive, creating a cycle of hardship. What I’m trying to say is that we can create our own peace and calm by focusing on the beauty of little things and being abundantly satisfied. When we focus on joy, satisfaction, and the good things we have, we start shifting our perspective of what is. Try this simple exercise: When you wake up in the morning and its raining say, “It’s a beautiful day. The rain will nourish the plants and animals and provide water for us,” instead of, “Ugh, it’s a dreadful day, and I have to go to work in this miserable weather.” Notice how different it feels when you frame your thoughts positively versus negatively. Practice saying positive words and being kind throughout the day. Be mindful of what you say and avoid letting anything negative pass your lips. While we naturally go through constant changes in our lives, whether good or bad, we can change our perspective of how we see the world and ourselves. Kindness, love, beauty, and joy exist in everything if we look hard enough to see them. We need to be in a state of allowing, not disallowing. We are all worthy of great and good things in our lives, noone deserves to suffer. As a holistic counsellor, my journey with silence goes beyond personal enrichment—it's a cornerstone of my professional practice. In my role, being emotionally, physically, and spiritually present for my clients is paramount. To achieve this, I must first reconnect with myself, and I find solace and guidance through moments of silence. In the hustle and bustle of daily life, it's easy to become entangled in the chaos. However, I've learned that to be of service to others, I must first prioritize my own well-being. This means taking regular breaks to disconnect from the noise of the world and reconnect with the stillness within. In these moments of silence, I release the weight of external expectations and allow myself to simply be. I let go of the need to constantly do and achieve, and instead, I focus on being present in the moment. It is in this space of quiet contemplation that I find the answers I am seeking—whether they pertain to personal challenges or professional dilemmas. As a holistic counsellor, my role extends beyond traditional talk therapy. I am committed to providing a safe and supportive space for my clients to explore their innermost thoughts and feelings. To be truly present for them, I must first be present for myself. Sitting in silence allows me to quiet the mind and strip away the layers of distraction that often cloud my judgment. Without the constant barrage of external stimuli, I can tune into my inner voice and gain insight into my true self. In this space of quiet contemplation, I can discern my deepest desires, fears, and aspirations. It is through this process of introspection that I can uncover my purpose and align my actions with my deepest values. In silence, I create space for clarity and insight to emerge. I may discover hidden talents or passions that have long been buried beneath the noise of everyday life. I may also gain a newfound appreciation for the beauty and wonder of the world around me. I become attuned to the rhythm of my body and my mind, and cultivate a sense of inner peace and tranquility. Through this process of self-reconnection, I can identify areas of my life where I may be feeling stuck or unfulfilled. I can then take proactive steps to initiate change and move towards a more fulfilling and authentic existence. I recognize the importance of nurturing all aspects of my being—mind, body, and spirit—in order to show up fully for my clients. By honoring my own needs and boundaries, I am better equipped to support others on their healing journeys. To be truly present for them, I must first be present for myself. Change is inevitable, yet it can be challenging to navigate without a sense of inner clarity and purpose. By sitting in silence, we can cultivate the resilience and inner strength needed to embrace change with grace and acceptance. In the silence, we confront our fears and insecurities, and we find the courage to step outside of our comfort zones. As we stand on the threshold of a new year, it's a perfect time to reflect on the incredible journey that was 2023. It was a year filled with exciting changes, personal challenges, and transformative experiences. In this blog post, I want to take you on a journey through my past year and the valuable lessons I learned along the way. From embracing self-growth, my experiences and my life journey of pushing myself to be a better version of myself, have shaped me into the person I am today. Leaving the Comfort Zone: For years, I had the safety net of my training and development contracts, providing me with a sense of security and a fallback plan. However, in 2023, I faced a pivotal moment in my life. It was a moment when I decided to step away from the familiar committing myself fully to the growth of my own business. This decision was not made lightly. It meant letting go of the safety and comfort I had grown accustomed to. It was a daunting and at times a scary choice to invest in my own growth and well-being. But it was also a decision rooted in a profound understanding of who I aspired to become and how I wanted to be represented in my business, which is not just a venture but my purpose and passion. My journey of Self-Growth: In addition to pursuing my business goals, I embarked on a personal journey of self-growth. Here are some of the key highlights: Building My Online Presence: I developed my own website, providing a platform to share my knowledge and connect with a broader audience. This step was instrumental in expanding my reach and establishing my online presence. Completing My Studies: Completing my Master's in Holistic Counselling and Masters in Empowerment Coaching, nurturing my own personal and professional growth. Rebranding My Business: A significant part of my self-growth journey involved rebranding my business. I worked on creating a fresh and appealing brand identity that better represented my vision and values and was more clear and inclusive to all individuals. Journal Publication: One of my proudest achievements in 2023 was working on publishing a journal. This project allowed me to delve into my passion for writing and self-expression, contributing to my personal and professional growth. This year will be the release of it. My Support System: Throughout this transformative journey, I was fortunate to have unwavering support from my loved ones. Their encouragement and understanding helped me navigate stressful moments and make difficult decisions with greater ease. Having a strong support system proved invaluable in pursuing my dreams. Child abuse is a deeply troubling issue that leaves scars on the lives of survivors, affecting them well into adulthood. Often, adults who find themselves in abusive relationships may not fully grasp the impact their situation has on their children, both directly and indirectly. Fear and turmoil can consume individuals, rendering them silent in the face of abuse. However, it's crucial to acknowledge the hurt they endure and to educate individuals on recognizing the signs and protecting their children from experiencing similar trauma. In this blog, I aim to shed light on the profound impact of child abuse, providing insights into recognizing and addressing this pervasive issue. While many have not had the opportunity to recoginse or understand what they going through as victims themselves, I hope this gives individuals who are silently struggling currently an opportunity to speak to someone and gain the support and help they need. Acknowledging the Pain of the Past To begin, let us acknowledge the pain and loss that survivors of child abuse have experienced throughout their childhood. It's essential to recognize the courage and strength they exhibit in confronting these difficult challenges. Child abuse creates a haunting legacy, and as adults, we may sometimes struggle to find the right words to express our understanding and empathy. Childhood Abuse: An Intergenerational Cycle Childhood abuse can create a vicious cycle, with the trauma experienced by one generation affecting the next. In some cases, adults who were themselves victims of abuse may unknowingly perpetuate this cycle, unable to recognize the signs of abuse or protect their own children. Breaking the Silence One of the most insidious aspects of abuse is the silence that often accompanies it. Victims may be controlled by their abusers, living in constant fear and unable to speak out. It is essential to encourage individuals to find their voice, speak up, and seek help. Recognizing signs of trauma and abuse in children when you are a parent in an abusive relationship is challenging but essential for their well-being. Here are some steps to help parents identify signs that their child may be suffering from trauma and abuse: Observe Changes in Behavior: Pay close attention to any sudden or significant changes in your child's behavior. This may include increased aggression, withdrawal, mood swings, or sudden fearfulness. Notice Regression: Look for signs of regression in your child's behavior, such as bedwetting, thumb-sucking (if they had stopped), or clinging behavior. Regression can be a coping mechanism for children dealing with trauma. Monitor Physical Symptoms: Keep an eye out for unexplained physical symptoms, like headaches, stomachaches, or frequent illness. These can be manifestations of emotional distress. Listen Actively: Encourage open communication with your child. Listen to what they say and pay attention to what they don't say. Children may drop hints or make indirect comments about their experiences. Changes in Academic Performance: If your child's academic performance declines suddenly, it could be a sign of emotional distress. Also, watch for any significant changes in their attitude towards school. Sleep Disturbances: Notice any sleep disturbances, such as nightmares, night sweats, or insomnia. These may indicate that your child is struggling with traumatic experiences. Social Isolation: If your child becomes increasingly isolated, avoids social activities, or loses interest in spending time with friends, it could be a sign of emotional turmoil.
